Voice channels + audio routing
How to record Discord voice chat and make searchable notes
A community planning call or project discussion can happen in a Discord voice channel just as easily as in a calendar meeting. Give the conversation a clear start and finish, then keep its decisions in searchable notes.
macOS 13+ and Windows 11 · 7-day trial · One-time purchase after the trial
Before you start
Complete MeetingDebrief setup and download a transcription model and a summary model. Run a short test with both your voice and another participant’s audio.
Tell everyone you are recording and get the required permission. Follow your organization’s recording rules. MeetingDebrief captures audio separately from the meeting app; do not rely on that app’s recording indicator.
Start with Discord’s input and output devices
Discord supports conversations in direct messages and server voice channels. For this workflow, join on the computer running MeetingDebrief and check User Settings → Voice & Video. Discord’s audio troubleshooting guide explains its input, output, and microphone checks.
Your voice
Select the intended microphone in Discord and in MeetingDebrief’s Input Device setting. Use MeetingDebrief’s Test Microphone control. On macOS, allow microphone access when prompted; on Windows, check microphone access in privacy settings if necessary.
The channel’s voices
Enable Include system audio in MeetingDebrief. On Windows, choose the output device matching Discord’s output. On macOS, complete the system audio permission step. Make a short test that includes someone else speaking.
Pause game audio, music, and unrelated streams before the discussion. System audio capture can include those sounds too, reducing the clarity of the spoken record.
Give a drop-in voice channel a recording window
A voice channel can stay open after the planning conversation has ended. Decide which discussion you are recording and tell people before it begins. If someone new joins, make sure they know the recording is active before continuing.
Discord’s push-to-talk and voice activity modes control what Discord sends. MeetingDebrief captures its microphone independently. Releasing the push-to-talk key or muting yourself in Discord does not necessarily stop local recording.
Use the recorder’s pause control for a break or off-record discussion, and stop it when the working session ends. The app does not infer that the meeting is over because people move to another channel or start a different activity.
Record and transcribe the Discord discussion
- With everyone informed and both audio sources tested, click Start Recording in MeetingDebrief.
- Keep the recorder visible. If enabled, live transcription provides a preview, but review the final transcript after recording.
- Stop at the end of the agreed discussion. With Auto-transcribe after recording enabled, processing starts automatically; otherwise use Transcribe on the saved session.
- Review project names, usernames spoken aloud, and deadlines. Correct individual lines with the pencil control.
Speaker detection separates your microphone as Me from remote audio as Other. It does not map the voices in a server channel to Discord usernames. For a decision involving several people, record the confirmed owner in your notes.
Keep a decision log you can find later
Select Project Discussion in Summary and click Generate for a project call. Use General for a broader community discussion or Action Items for follow-ups. Review whether the group actually agreed on each listed decision.
Give the session a topic-based title and add a tag such as community-planning. Add message links manually in Notes where they explain a spoken reference. MeetingDebrief does not fetch server messages, attachments, or screen-share content.
When sharing back to Discord, copy the reviewed summary and choose the appropriate text channel. Leave private or unrelated material out of the shared version. The local session can remain your more detailed record.
Use global search to find an earlier decision across meetings. A stable tag is more useful than naming every session “Discord call.”
Diagnose an incomplete voice recording
I hear others in Discord, but they are absent from the transcript
Recheck Include system audio and the output device. If you changed a headset, the selected Windows capture device may no longer be the one carrying the call.
The recording contains only the channel’s audio
Check MeetingDebrief’s microphone selection independently of Discord. If your voice is audible in the recording but missing from the transcript, review the transcription settings and try re-transcribing after checking the language.
The notes include unrelated conversation
Use a defined start and stop next time. For this session, review and edit the summary before sharing. A summary template cannot undo an overly broad recording window.
